Stop Managing Storage

Stop Managing Storage
the Hard Way
The storage conversation usually happens after something breaks. By then the cost is already real. Unplanned downtime, emergency vendor calls, recovery work that pulls engineers off everything else.
Oracle ASM exists for exactly that reason. Vigilant Technologies has deployed it across enterprise environments for more than two decades. The consistent finding is straightforward. Once an organization moves to ASM, storage incidents drop, the team spends less time managing infrastructure, and the environment holds up under conditions that would have caused serious problems before.
Most storage incidents are not hardware failures. They are failures of the tools that were supposed to prevent them.
One Storage Layer, One Team
Many Oracle environments have a storage administration problem that nobody fully owns. The database team manages queries. The infrastructure team manages disks. When something breaks in between, both teams spend time figuring out whose problem it is before anyone starts fixing it.
ASM removes the gap. All Oracle storage sits under one administrative layer, managed through the same tools the database team already uses. Storage grows, rebalances, and recovers within that layer. No infrastructure ticket, no separate escalation path, and no waiting.

Storage That Actively Blocks Corruption
There is a real difference between a tool that tells you corruption happened and a tool that stops it. Most storage platforms will tell you about a corruption, but ASM actually prevents it.
Write requests that do not originate from Oracle are rejected outright, before reaching the disk. In environments with compliance obligations or audit requirements, that difference carries weight. A system that blocked an unauthorized write produces a very different conversation than a system that logged one.
ASM also runs continuous background checks and repairs problems it finds. Corruption does not accumulate quietly and surface during a recovery exercise. It gets addressed while the environment is running.

Better Performance Without New Hardware
Storage capacity and storage performance are not the same problem, but they often get treated as one. When applications slow down, the default response is to buy more or faster hardware.
ASM has a built-in capability called Intelligent Data Placement that changes that equation. Frequently accessed data automatically lands on the fastest available storage. Data that rarely gets touched moves to higher-capacity, lower-speed areas. Application performance improves without a procurement cycle.
Multi-Site Resilience Without Multiple Tools
Running Oracle across two data centers used to mean running two sets of storage tools, one for each site, each with its own administration overhead and each adding its own failure points.
ASM handles cross-site storage natively. Data protection is distributed across locations automatically, and if one site goes offline, the other keeps running. Protection levels can also vary per database within the same storage pool. Maximum protection for production, lighter coverage for test and development, all managed from one place.
Storage and Disaster Recovery Working as One
Many organizations treat storage and disaster recovery as separate investments with separate teams. In Oracle environments, that separation creates a real vulnerability.
When a storage event hits the primary database, the time it takes to bring the standby environment online determines how long the business is affected. If storage and disaster recovery are not built to work together, that window is longer than it needs to be.
ASM and Data Guard are designed to close it. Both systems share the same storage layer, so Oracle manages the entire configuration consistently. Recovery from primary to standby does not involve translating between storage formats or staging data in an intermediate location. The standby is ready when it is needed. In some configurations, that standby environment also serves as the path to migrate to ASM in the first place, with the primary running uninterrupted throughout.
Migration Without Business Disruption
The migration question is usually the one that stalls the conversation. Changing storage architecture on a live Oracle environment is a real risk, and anyone framing it as routine either has not done it recently or is not being straight with you.
Vigilant has done it across environments ranging from standard standalone databases to multi-terabyte clustered configurations. The method depends on the environment. Most standard databases migrate with the system fully online. Cutover takes minutes. Very large environments use continuous replication so data keeps flowing through the transition, and cutover risk approaches zero.
No Additional License Required
ASM is included with Oracle Database. No separate purchase, no new vendor.
If your organization is paying for a third-party volume manager to sit alongside Oracle, that cost does not buy anything ASM does not do better. Removing it is one of the few infrastructure decisions that reduces cost and improves the environment at the same time.
